Huck Duping Evangelicals? Appears So

Several weeks ago, Mike Huckabee told Pat Robertson on CBN,

“I think I’m stronger than most people because I truly understand the nature of the war that we are in with Islamo fascism. These are people that want to kill us. It’s a theocratic war. And I don’t know if anybody fully understands that. I’m the only guy on that stage with a theology degree. I think I understand it really well.”

Well apparently the former Governor of Arkansas misspoke about his educational background. It appears that Huck doesn’t have a Theology degree after all. It also appears that he may have even been a dropout!

From the New York Times Magazine:

If young Mike Huckabee was ever rebellious or difficult, there’s no record of it. He preached his first sermon as a teenager, married his high-school sweetheart and went off to Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia. There he majored in speech and communications, worked at a radio station and earned his B.A. in a than two years. He spent a year at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Tex., before dropping out to work for the televangelist James Robison, who bought him his first decent wardrobe and showed him how to use television. H/T: The Carpetbagger Report

HE DROPPED OUT!

Only in America can a dropout consider themselves to have a degree and get a “free-pass”. Where is the NYTimes editorial?!? This was an interview that appeared in the magazine not a political editorial. Where is the expose on CNN, FOX, MSNBC, etc…?!?

It remains my belief that there are facts about Huck that are being tucked away for future use by whoever the Democrat Party nominates. Huck is NOT the right choice for the GOP.

How for the love of Pete did Huck become a Pastor? Can ANYONE answer that?

What? A politician that lies? Say it a’int so! That’s how they get elected — telling lies. The whole lot of them. Go ahead, try and name a candidate that doesn’t lie.

As for the becoming a minister, in many Southern Baptist churches, they don’t care. They’re not as concerned with your educational accomplishments as they are with whether you can talk the talk.

Ok then, so that I have this straight, it seems that the Southern Baptist Church has no interest in if you know what you are talking about when preaching to their followers? That seems asinine. No wonder I’m Roman Catholic.

Well, they want you to know what you’re talking about, but they trust the church to make that determination, not an educational institution. They interview and research people, but having a degree isn’t an automatic in (or out). Mainly because there’s SO many churches that there are literally not enough with those degrees for every church to have one!

The article failed to continue on with the fact that he holds a master’s degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1980. So yes he does hold a degree in Theology.

Linkless Randers… do you have evidence to this so-called “fact”? Because I cannot find anything anywhere on the web, including Huckabee’s own sites, stating that he has a degree in Theology or Religion from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Which by the way is about the same as saying that I have a degree in business from the Korean College of Underwater Basket Weaving. Baptist only believe in one theology. It is called Sole Scriptura which discounts 2,000 years of Christian existence and tradition. But I digress.

The information quoted from the NY Times Magazine is from his own book, where do you get your info from?

Joe Carter, Huckabee’s Director of Research said in an email to Jim Geraghty:

    Jim,

Governor Huckabee doesn’t have a theology degree. He only spent a year in seminary.

Also, it’s not surprising that he doesn’t know much about the specific beliefs of the LDS church. There aren’t a lot of LDS members in Arkansas; they comprise just .007 percent of the population (about 20,000 out of 2,810,872 people). Most Southern evangelicals don’t have much exposure to that particular religion. Even in seminary you’re not likely to study the LDS faith unless you take a class on apologetics.

    -Joe

Sounds a lot like confirmation to me……

And in case you are wondering, a BA in Biblical Studies is not the same as say a BA or graduate degree in Religion or (forgive me) THEOLOGY.
