Iowa in the Record Books, Hawkeyes Like Huck and Obama [UPDATED]

By a large margin the Hawkeye state caucused for Mike Huckabee. The former Baptist Pastor who has an affliction which prevents him from being honest about his own past has successfully hoodwinked enough Iowans to take the coveted Iowa Republican Caucus.

Ignorant on foreign policy issues (by his own admission) and lacking in a Conservative immigration policy aside, Iowans voted for this tax raising nanny state promoting former governor from the same home town as the worst President in US History. It is this type of stupidity that leads people in the elitist population centers of this country to believe those of us in the heartland are apathetic fools who don’t pay attention to the actual issues.

Huck garnered 34% of the caucus votes leading Mitt Romney (24%), Fred Thompson (14%), John McCain (13%), and Ron Paul (10%). Fred Thompson needed a 3rd place finish and he got 3rd place.

Significantly missing any Caucus support was Rudy Giuliani who failed to capture even 1% of caucusing Republicans. This is the most significant development out of Iowa. Iowans have shown that the slick talking former mayor of New York whose liberal social stances do not play well in the heartland of this country. And unless he’s a total fool, he should know that his home state of New York will overwhelmingly fall to the Dems in the General Election as will Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey, Illinois, and California. If Rudy cannot gain momentum of any kind in the heartland, he would represent a liability as the Republican Nominee. The only benefit having him would be his ability to pull in cross over Blue Dog Democrat votes in the aforementioned states. Sorry Rudy, September 11th cannot and will not make you President of the United States.

As for the Dems, Barack Obama took the Democrat Caucus with a significant margin of victory. He garnered 38% of the votes from caucusing Democrats. This is significant in that speculation was that the Democratic winner might be decided by as little as 1,000 votes. Coming in second was John Edwards with 30% support among caucusing Democrats and third was former first lady turned surrogate Senator from New York (surrogate for Billy Bob Bubba) Hillary Clinton. In an additional surprise, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson actually received 2% from his caucusing party members.

Late breaking, FoxNews.com is reporting that Senator Chris Dodd (D CT) is bowing out of the race to win the Democrat Nomination. Dodd receive only 1 solitary vote in Iowa. Just 1. Wonder who he will throw his support behind. I predict John Edwards. He could use that 1 vote let me tell you [sarcasm implied intentionally].

Huck winning the Republican Caucus is a win for the Dems. As Susan Estrich claims in the following video tapped interview that made its way onto YouTube, Huck is the Democrats dream for a Republican Nominee. I’ll go out on a limb and say that Edwards is the Republicans dream for a Democratic Nominee.

She further states that she’s going to dance at another inaugural ball. Not if Hillary can’t beat Obama or Edwards. Obama will be tough to beat in the general, but not Edwards. So Susan, don’t order your dress quite yet.

And let me remind everyone of one little fact before we read too much into these reports out of Iowa, New Hampshire is in just 5 days. Whatever momentum Iowa used to garner the winner going into New Hampshire, this accelerated campaign has negated that momentum. We are playing an all new game in politics now.

Big question. Why do Democrats even try in Iowa. According to ABC News, the number of Democrats caucusing is minute compared to Republicans. With 98% of precincts reporting in the Democrat race there were only 2,469 votes. Rudy got more that that. Republicans by contrast with 85% of precincts reporting cast 103,045. Which party do you think will win Iowa in the General?

UPDATE 11:25 EST

With 85% of Republican precincts reporting, Rudy has rebounded with 4% and Thompson and McCain are in a dead heat tie with Thompson leading McCain by just 278 votes. Rudy’s 4% is not nearly enough to justify the expense that his campaign is going through. For that matter neither is the 25% that Romney is now credited with. Romney, has out spent the Huckster 20-1 in Iowa and Huck has not exactly been a money pinching miser.

UPDATE 11:32 EST

Joe Biden (D DE) is out as well! Biden did just slightly better than Dodd in the Democrat Caucus in Iowa gaining 1% (23 votes). But apparently it wasn’t enough to keep him in the race. Caucus rules prevented Dennis Kucinich (Moron OH) from caucusing as well as Mike Gravel (D AK).
