Berkeley CA: Marines Get Out

Gribbit’s Solution to Ignorant Liberalism run amok and symbolic legislation

The city council of Berkeley California has once again proven that they are not interested in preserving the Union. They have voted to kick Marine Recruiters out of town.

In response, Sen. Jim DeMint (R SC) is drafting legislation aimed at revoking federal funding earmarked for projects in Berkley.

From FoxNews.com:

“This is a slap in the face to all brave service men and women and their families,” DeMint said in a prepared statement. “The First Amendment gives the City of Berkeley the right to be idiotic, but from now on they should do it with their own money.”

“If the city can’t show respect for the Marines that have fought, bled and died for their freedom, Berkeley should not be receiving special taxpayer-funded handouts,” he added.

DeMint said he will draft legislation to rescind any earmarks dedicated for the City of Berkeley in the recently passed appropriations bill — which his office tallied to value about $2.1 million. He said that any money taken back would be transferred to the Marines.

DeMint’s office provided a preliminary list of items that would be subject to his proposal:

— $975,000 for the University of California at Berkeley, for the Matsui Center for Politics and Public Service, which may include establishing an endowment, and for cataloguing the papers of Congressman Robert Matsui.

— $750,000 for the Berkeley/Albana ferry service.

— $243,000 for the Chez Panisse Foundation, for a school lunch initiative to integrate lessons about wellness, sustainability and nutrition into the academic curriculum.

— $94,000 for a Berkeley public safety interoperability program.

— $87,000 for the Berkeley Unified School District, nutrition education program.

In spite of this purely symbolic vote by the city officials in Berkeley, they haven’t the power to evict the US Marines.

A senior Marine official tells FOX News that the Marine office in Berkeley isn’t going anywhere.

“We understand things are different there, but some people just don’t get it. This is a part of the military machine that gives them the right to do what they do, but what they are doing is extreme,” the official said.

The Marine official, speaking with FOX News on Friday, said Marine Commandant Gen. James Conway scoffed at the news, but there are no plans for to protest the City Council’s decisions. There are definitely no plans to move the recruiting station either. emphasis mine

“To actually put something into law that encourages the disruption of a federal office is ridiculous. They are not going to kick a federal office out of its rightful place there, and this is not going to discourage those young patriots who want to be Marines,” the official said.

Forgive me, but should local level politicians interrupt the function of the federal government to perform its Constitutional duties, doesn’t that local government face federal sanction under the insurrection act? I mean, isn’t this action similar to seceding from the Union? And if so, isn’t the President of the United States empowered under federal law to quell the insurrection by force if needed? I do believe that I’ve read that somewhere.

That said, I think that the ultimate punishment for the city of Berkeley California is a targeted draft. Yes I said targeted draft.

Liberals always like to use the term “targeted tax cuts” as a way to hoodwink the electorate into voting for them so how about we use a targeted draft to teach this municipality a lesson.

There are far worse duty stations in the US military than a combat zone. I say draft all young men, and if they want equal rights so badly in Lib-Town USA their young women as well, into the US Marine Corps. After the intensive 13 week training schedule at Paris Island, NC (not Camp Pendleton) a two year stationing in Greenland might be appropriate. Let them spend two years each guarding weather stations in the frozen ice of Greenland since they don’t want military recruiters to operate normally in their precious little piece of the Great Society. Since they don’t want the military to look for volunteers in their town, make it mandatory for each of them to serve. Perhaps it will serve as a warning to any other liberal minded town to not take symbolic actions like these and the issuing of arrest warrants of the President and Vice President of the United States.

Speaking of which, how about we kick Vermont out of the Union, declare war, then invade it. Perhaps we could use draftees from Berkeley as first wave troops in the invasion. Remember, cowardice in the face of the enemy is punishable by death.

We should do like “Escape from New York”.

Fence Berkeley in. Get the marines out. Take away the city’s federal funding, and send the Gitmo terrorists in.

They passed a non-binding resolution and issued a parking permit. That an insurrection? Me thinks you’re just a wee bit of an authoritarian.

Actually, the line is crossed if Berzerkly sends it’s police department out to enforce the vote as an ordinance or other action such as zoning.

Shots would not have to be fired for it to be literally an insurrection. A police officer handing the station commander a condemnation or eviction notice would do.

As for “authoritarian”, the last CinC to put down a rebellion was called a lot worse.
