Suspension vs Abandoning a Campaign

I was in a rather heated argument with my co-blogger at Stop the ACLU earlier this evening about Juan MexiCain and the inevitability of his nomination. He is inarguably the front-runner for the GOP Nomination but he doesn’t have enough delegates to secure the nomination. 1,191 seated delegates are required to secure the nomination. And it is possible to be the only remaining candidate in the field but yet not get the required delegates. How? Once a candidate wins his/her delegates, those delegates remain theirs until the convention. If a candidate is on the ballot, even though he/she dropped out of the race, that candidate continues to accumulate delegates provided enough people vote for that candidate.

For instance, both John Edwards and Mitt Romney chose to “suspend” their candidacies not abandon them. I know that in normal every-day speech that is just a matter of semantics but a suspension does leave the door open for a return. What if in states like Ohio, Mitt Romney were to continue to collect delegates or possibly even win the state? Isn’t it possible that he could win enough delegates to prevent Juan MexiCain from securing the nomination? That would result in a brokered convention.

On the Democrat side, there is a much more plausible case for a brokered convention. Obama and Clinton are neck and neck in their quests for the nomination of their party. It is possible, that John Edwards will become a factor in the nomination at their convention.

Juan MexiCain may very well end up being our Nominee. But I have to say, I won’t vote for the turd. I apologize to all self-respecting turds everywhere. I know that it is not fair to you to lump Juan in with you but I couldn’t find another semi-clean word to describe this revolting individual.

He may convince enough people to “coalesce” around him but I will not be included in the number. I may not do as Ann Coulter says and actively campaign for Clinton, but I will actively campaign against Juan MexiCain.

Apparently Juan wasn’t paying too close attention to the 2006 mid-terms. How do you honestly think we ended up with the Do-Nothing Congress? It’s going to happen again in November.

One last reminder of history before we repeat that too.

The last person to be elected President from the Senate was assassinated on November 22, 1963. I sure hope whoever the Democrat Nominee is they choose a good VP. MexiCain’s choice won’t matter because that person won’t be needed.
