John McCain has been attacked by the New York Times for helping a friend who represented a cable company who had a pending action with the FCC. The Senator sent a letter in an attempt to get the FCC to look into the matter and now he’s accused of corruption.
The issue is the transfer of a license from one company to another. The action normally takes about 4 months, this took 8. When the company wasn’t getting anywhere waiting on the FCC to take action one way or the other, they had their lobbyist contact a Senator that she knew, John McCain. McCain agreed that it was taking a bit too long (double the time) and sent a letter to the FCC. The letter has been released to the media.
Is requesting then demanding that action be taken one way or another by a government agency corruption? That is the real question at hand.
To date there is no evidence that the Senator tried to influence the decision of the FCC rather was looking for a decision on the matter that was 4 months over due. I say over due because the average wait in matters like these is 4 months.
The lobbyist, working on behalf of her client, asked a Senator she knew to look into the matter. He did. Agreed that it was taking too long and asked for a decision. That’s it. He didn’t say, approve the request, he said make a decision.
The FCC like the broadcast networks, cable companies, and satellite are granted their authority and license from Congress. As a United States Senator, he could have overridden the FCC and brought the matter to the floor of the Senate, he did not. That would have been influence peddling. Something that Clinton would do not John McCain.
The New York Times is delving into the realm of Super Market Tabloids and may lose it’s already unworthy influence in the American press. Good!
As I’ve said repeatedly before, I’m not McCain fan but I do think yesterday’s story was a cheap shot and baseless.
