Romney Says V.P. is O.K. with Him; But Will Big Dog Ask?

The Politico is reporting that Mitt Romney would accept an offer of being McCain’s VP choice if asked. In his first interview since endorsing McCain for the GOP Nomination, Mitt Romney told Fox News’ Sean Hannity…

“I think any Republican leader in this country would be honored to be asked to serve as the vice presidential nominee, myself included.”

“Of course this is a nation which needs strong leadership. And if the nominee of our party asked you to serve with him, anybody would be honored to receive that call … and to accept it, of course.”

Romney would bring Conservative credentials as well as youth to the GOP ticket. McCain is 71 years old and has a history of countering Conservatives in the Senate. This alone has left a bitter taste in the mouth of Conservative Republicans.

If not for the New York Times sliming a few weeks ago, even I would probably be advocating an Election Day boycott. But thanks to the New York Times combined with the fear of an Obama Presidency is bringing Conservatives back home. And naming Mitt would go a long way to cementing support from Conservatives.

The question of remaining animosity has been answered as well. Given his lack luster performance at the endorsement press conference, it would be expected by the public that there is no love lost between the former candidate and our Nominee. But Mitt put that to bed in the Hannity interview as well.

According to The Politico:

According to two separate reports, Romney is being talked up as a running mate by members of the Bush inner circle. But McCain and his closest advisers have little regard for their former rival thanks to the bitter, year-long race waged between the two Republicans.

Romney says, however, that he thinks the wounds have healed.

“There are really no hard feelings, I don’t think, on either side of this,” he said in the interview. “There were no pacts and so forth that make people feel like that we will never come together. Instead these campaigns are all coming together. We are supporting our nominee enthusiastically, aggressively.”

Romney said his top fundraisers have already met with McCain’s campaign.

“We are laying out ways we can support his campaign.”

To make his case, Romney employed a canine metaphor.

Listening to Obama and Clinton discuss their national security credentials, Romney said, is akin to “listening to two chihuahuas argue about which is the biggest dog.”

“When it comes to national security, John McCain is the big dog, and they are the chihuahuas,” he said.

Even if there is remaining conflict, keep in mind that constructing a ticket to win the General Election in spite of personal feelings for the good of the nation is more important than lingering animosities. There is precedent within both Parties for such a ticket. Kennedy/Johnson, Reagan/Bush, and Clinton/Gore come to mind. It is said that FDR and Harry Truman didn’t get along. But then again who did Harry get along with. I mean I bet he could make Will Rogers hate him. But I digress.

Mitt is younger, more Conservative and from the North East. McCain is older and more experienced and from the South West. In his willingness to irritate the Party base for what he considers right shows that he won’t be bullied by the press and their polls. We all hope his desire to reach across the aisle is gone and he’s willing to put the country first.

Most importantly is a question. Will the ‘Big Dog Bite’? Will he select Romney as his VP?
