Time for McCain to Unite the GOP

Human Events Online in their current editorial brings forth the idea that McCain should take advantage of the time that he has available to him before the Conventions by naming someone with proven Conservative credentials sooner rather than later.

McCain must work to unite a divided Republican Party, just as Senators Hillary Clinton (N.Y.) and Barack Obama (Ill.) are poised to go the distance in what is sure to be a drawn-out and increasingly vicious battle for the Democratic nomination, a battle that will increase the possibility of a Republican victory. Human Events believes that the best way for McCain to energize the apathetic GOP grass-roots conservatives that he desperately needs for November is to name a solidly conservative running mate and to do so soon.

By taking advantage of the time available, McCain would mend the fences that his Senate career has damaged with economic and social Conservatives while the Dems shed blood in their fight for their Party’s nomination. Let Hillary and Barack do the blood letting while he repairs relationships is the theory.

He could do a lot to mend those fences and show respect for Conservatives by naming a running mate soon.

In Human Events last week (page 3), Political Editor John Gizzi listed a number of publicly discussed Republican vice presidential possibilities, including many solid conservatives, such South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, Alaska Gov. Sarah Pallin, Wisconsin U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Chris Cox, a former California congressman. For McCain to choose someone such as those four would be a sure sign he recognizes the critical importance of conservatives and having them behind him.

South Dakota Senator John Thune’s name has been floated as well. I would add another to that list. Former Gov. Mitt Romney. As a former rival in the quest for the nomination, a Romney selection would show unity within the Party. I’d advocate more for a Fred Thompson selection but like McCain, Thompson’s age may be a factor.

Speaking of age, let’s analyze those who have been mentioned.

McCain is 71

Sanford – 47
Thune – 47
Ryan – 38
Cox – 55
Pallin – 44
Romney – a young 61

Any of these selections could and would represent possible victories in 2012, 2016, and if McCain has 2 term stamina, 2020. This would also represent a possible 20 – 24 year reign for Republicans in the White House (2000 – 2020/24) another plus.

Instead of waiting for the Convention, it is time for McCain to fish or cut bait. He needs Conservative support to get elected in November and he knows it. He should either resign himself to the fact he will lose or he will select a proven Conservative running mate sooner rather than later in order to win.
