It is seeming like that each day produces another agency that previously predicted that scorching of the earth due to man-made activity is coming forth with SOME truth about the winter of 2008. That it is the coldest since … The since part is debatable.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is now jumping into the fray stating that this winter has been the coldest since 2001. Others claim that this has been the coldest winter since 1993 or 1994 to which I would tend to agree. The temperature hit -20 F in February of 1994 here in Ohio. There were big-rigs abandoned on the interstate with gelled diesel fuel in their fuel tanks in North East Ohio on that cold February day. That was actual temperature not wind chill -20 F.
I come from an area of Ohio which gets all the snow. East of Cleveland on Lake Erie gets dumped on. We had been hearing for years this theory of Global Warming and it was obvious that the snow fall wasn’t what it used to be. But was man to blame?
I also come from a time in our history where I remember the anti-littering campaigns. The trash that used to accumulate on the sides of our streets was horrible. But that doesn’t happen as much anymore. Here in South West Ohio where I now make my home today, there are parts of the city that still get that. But there are other parts of Dayton that the home owners and/or residents have enough pride in their neighborhoods to pick that trash up and dispose of it.
There was a time when coal fired electric plants in this country released their pollutants into the air unabated. Now they must abate the systems to remove the many different types of pollutants. I can say this as fact because I used to work for a company that would remove the collected materials from the abatement systems of a couple of coal fired plants.
Man has done a lot to curb our impact on the environment, but should we remove our entire “footprint”? That would be suicide. If High Priest Al Gore and his minions of the Church of Global Warming of Modern Day Idiots (MDI) would have their way, man’s “footprint” would be zero, the earth would warm anyway, and most people would die off due to starvation because the cost of living would out pace incomes in this world.
If implemented, the MDI’s programs would expensive, the ability to work in this nation would be non-existent because businesses would close due to costs or move off shore to less regulated countries. Wait, that’s already happening.
A true undisputed consensus does exist as to why the earth’s temperature changes. There is such a thing as greenhouse gases of which water vapor is the most abundant. These gases combined with sunspot activity have a direct impact on the temperature of the earth. These being undisputed, without draining the world’s oceans, there is no way we can regulate the earth’s temperatures. Is anyone advocating that? No, they’re not.
The current theory is to reduce man’s output of a gas that is absorbed by plants. Oh yeah, that makes total sense.
Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen which we absorb and release carbon dioxide. Man and every other breathing animal on this planet live in a symbiotic relationship with the plant life. We need what they release, they need what we release. Man released an estimated 6 Billion Metric Tons of CO2 in 2004. The earth itself released an estimated 180 Billion Metric Tons that same year. Of the total 186 Billion Metric Tons, man’s contribution is a little more than 3% of the total amount released into the atmosphere.
Likewise, an argument can and has been made that man’s contribution via the CO2 released is so inconsequential, that if we ceased to exist at this very moment climate change up or down would continue.
Mars is experiencing of all things, global climate change. How is that possible? Water is the most abundant greenhouse gas and man’s CO2 footprint causes global warming. But Mars has no men and no water. Could it be that big ball of gas that this planet orbits? You know that naturally occurring nuclear reaction in the heavens? It’s called the sun moron! That big yellow thing that heats the earth.
When the sun’s nuclear reaction is most active, the earth warms. When it is less active it cools. But that makes sense doesn’t it? Not to the MDI.
We have evidence right here on earth. When a nuclear power plant is more active, we get more electricity when it is less active we get less electricity. Or how about the winter of 1977 vs the winter of 2000? In 1977 there was a blizzard which crippled the north east of this country. From Cleveland to Buffalo and beyond, the snow absolutely shut down this part of the country. In 2000, snow fall in this country was drastically less. But now we’re cooling again and if you look at history, the cooling is happening right on schedule. We are due for another “Little Ice Age” and the time for the temperatures to retreat is here.

Blizzard of 1977 Buffalo NY
History, my friends, tells us that climate change is cyclic not man made.
Footnote…
In 1978 another blizzard hit the Ohio valley. Dayton, OH got 12.2″ of snow in a 24 hour period. On March 7 - 8, 2008, Dayton, OH received 10.0″ in 24 hours.

My God Man! Don’t you realize!!! WE SENT TWO ROVERS TO MARS!!!! SUV’S!!! We destroyed that Virgin planet!!!
Yes we did Matt, but they were powered by solar batteries if I remember correctly.
But they were still SUV’s (Scientific Utility Vehicles). Algore says that even thinking about an SUV will cause
ManBearPigGlobal Warming!!! It CAN’T be the sun! Then Algore would be wrong, and how can the man that invented the Internet be wrong!!!!Seriously though…you are correct- there is some cause to be concerned about the impact of climate change-not from warming, from cooling, as you point out. Again solar sunspot activity is next to zero. This could be heralding the return of the ice age you discuss or another Maunder or Dalton Minimum.
Maybe “be concerned” is to strong of a term here. Maybe we should be mindfull and prepare.
I like that Matt, Mindfull and Prepare.
Put away the sun oil and grab a parka because it is going to get rather chilly.
