Brit Hume Retiring! Fox Set to Lose ‘Fair and Balanced’ Champion

The Washington Post is reporting that Brit Hume, champion of Fox News Channel’s “Fair and Balanced” concept, is set to retire following this year’s Presidential election.

Brit Hume, a top anchor and executive with Fox News since the channel was launched 12 years ago, plans to step down at year’s end. But he won’t disappear entirely.

Sources familiar with the situation say that Hume, 65, will give up his job as Washington managing editor and anchor of “Special Report.” They say he is near a deal to continue with Fox in a senior statesman role, not unlike that of Tom Brokaw at NBC, for roughly 100 days a year.

In his new role, Hume would be a senior political analyst, anchor special events, serve as a panelist on “Fox News Sunday” and occasionally substitute for the host, Chris Wallace. - Howard Kurtz Washington Post Staff Writer

One thing that always sticks out about Brit’s broadcasts is his closing line, “Fair, Balanced, and Unafraid”. I think that is where I get my idea that he “champions” the “Fair and Balanced” concept.

I’ve seen him take his panelists, especially Juan Williams, to task over some backward thinking. I enjoy watching Juan squirm after being put in his place by Brit. But that said, he does maintain a certain balance during his show. That is something that is ironically missing with the alphabets (ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC). Brit Hume is THE example of what a true journalist is supposed to be. He will be missed but I am certain that he will still have input into how the newsroom at Fox operates.
