“Washington is Hanging the Middle-Class Out to Dry”
By: House Minority Leader John Boehner (R OH-8)
WASHINGTON, DC – At a news conference earlier today, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) recapped the consequences of the Washington Democrats’ agenda for middle-class Americans. From the trillion-dollar “stimulus” spending bill and $400 billion “omnibus” spending bill loaded with 9,000 unscrutinized earmarks to a national energy tax and a government-run health care plan that raises taxes and rations care, Washington is spending, taxing, and borrowing more than ever before – and middle-class Americans are paying the price. Video and a transcript of Boehner’s remarks on the middle-class follow:
“Last week, I visited my district in Ohio and several other places around the country. And I can tell you one thing: People are really fed up. You know, Washington is hanging the middle-class out to dry.
“And if you think about what the Democrats have forced them to pay for over the past five months, you can begin to understand. They’re being required to pay for the trillion-dollar stimulus plan that no Member of Congress was able to read. And while the President is trying to convince us the plan is working and that more jobs are being created, it’s clear we’re continuing to lose an awful lot of jobs. And the Vice President is admitting that Americans are being scammed. They can’t even get their stories straight.
“Back in Ohio, the so-called stimulus has been a disaster. And just this week, we learned that a Georgia town is attempting to use stimulus funds in order to lure a Fortune 500 company from Ohio with 1,200 jobs down to their state. How is that going to create more jobs in America, not just moving jobs from one state to another?
“But that’s not all. The middle-class is being expected to pay for the $400 billion omnibus appropriations bill with 9,000 earmarks in it. They’re expected to bail out those who have lied on their mortgage applications. They’re also paying for the government takeover of G.M. with no exit strategy. This summer, Washington Democrats are trying to enact the health plan that will include a tax increase and probably ration their care.
“But that’s not all. You’ve got the national energy tax that’s about to hit the middle-class. Anyone who drives a car or flips on a light switch is going to be paying much higher taxes for their energy. And we’re still hearing that they want to include a $108 billion global bailout in the war supplemental bill. This is not what the American middle-class expected when they voted for change.
“The pattern here is pretty clear: Every time the President makes a so-called ‘tough decision,’ it’s the American middle-class that gets hit the hardest. Over and over again, people who followed the rules, people who pay their mortgages on time, pay their credit cards on time, go to work every day, they’re the ones that are getting it stuck to them each and every day.
“Republicans know we can do better. We’re offering better solutions to create jobs, to restore savings, to control the debt, to expand Americans’ access to affordable health care, and clean up the environment, and lower energy costs all at the same time. And it would be high time the Democrats begin to work with us on bipartisan solutions that really will help the middle-class in America.”
