Sunday night, I began to watch the HBO mini-series ‘John Adams’ staring Paul Giamatti and produced by Tom Hanks. The first two parts of this film are an absolute necessity for all Americans. If we are to teach our children our history, we must understand it ourselves and this film goes a long way to educate.
Paul Giamatti brings Adams out of history books and brings a passion to a future President that history paints lightly. I for one had no idea how involved Adams was in the colonies declaring independence. It was Adams who commissioned Jefferson to author our Declaration of Independence and it was with Ben Franklin and John Adams that Jefferson consulted about the final draft. I’m sure some artistic liberties were taken in the book and in the film, but I have to say, they painstakingly made sure to bring authenticity to the film. The lighting by candlelight. The cold of winter. The fear of pox and fever. And the devout sense of duty of Washington.
I recommend this film in order to understand who we are as a people. I recommend this film to understand how our system of government works and why it was designed this way.
Sunday is Part 3 of the film subtitled, “Don’t Tread On Me!” HBO will be replaying the first two parts all week and it will be available On Demand beginning Monday.
