Eighty-One Percent of Americans Believe Middle-Class Tax Relief is Important to Keep in Budget, New Survey Shows
WASHINGTON, DC – House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today challenged President Obama’s apparent decision to allow the Democratic-controlled Congress to dump his long-promised middle-class tax cut from the FY 2010 budget, and vowed Republicans will offer a better budget that cuts taxes for middle-class families instead of raising them through a new national energy tax.
“This is an epic bait-and-switch that should infuriate every middle-class family in America,” Boehner said. “The American people overwhelmingly believe middle-class tax relief is essential to getting our economy moving again. But instead of cutting taxes for middle-class families, Washington Democrats are raising their taxes by as much as $3,100 a year in the middle of a deep recession.”
President Obama’s budget director, Peter Orszag, has endorsed both the House and Senate versions of the President’s FY 2010 budget – but according to the New York Times, “neither would extend a middle-class tax cut championed by Mr. Obama beyond 2010 unless a source of revenue to pay for it is identified.” Meanwhile, Boehner noted that a new national energy tax insisted upon by the President will hit virtually every American family and small business and could cost every American household up to $3,100 a year. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) confirmed this in public comments last week in which he indicated Democrats will use revenue from the President’s new national energy tax to pay for an expansion of government-run health care.
According to a Rasmussen survey released today, 81 percent of Americans believe it is important for Congress to pass a budget that includes the middle-class tax relief that was frequently promised but now abandoned by President Obama. Only 15 percent say the promised middle-class tax relief is not important.
“The Democratic budget spends too much, taxes too much, and borrows too much,” Boehner said. “It will hurt middle-class families at a time when they can least afford it.”
“Americans deserve a better budget, and members of all political stripes will have the chance to vote for one when the full text of the GOP alternative being finalized by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) is released this week,” Boehner added. “Instead of raising taxes on middle-class families and all Americans through the President’s national energy tax, Republicans will do what the American people want their government to do: we will curb spending, control the debt, and reduce the tax burden on working families and small businesses to create jobs and ease the strain on family budgets.”
Obamaramadingdong campaigned promising big labor that he would impose penalties on companies that move American jobs off-shore. This got him millions of union votes from labor thinking that jobs would return as companies seek to avoid the punitive actions that Obama promised. However, Obamaramadingdong in his lack of vision hasn’t thought to himself, “If I tax these companies, what will they do?” The answer my friends is clear. Move their corporate headquarters offshore as well.
The tidy towns and mountain vistas of Switzerland are an unlikely setting for an oil boom.
Yet a wave of energy companies has in the last few months announced plans to move to Switzerland — mainly for its appeal as a low-tax corporate domicile that looks relatively likely to stay out of reach of Barack Obama’s tax-seeking administration.
In a country with scant crude oil production of its own, the virtual energy boom has changed the canton or state of Zug, about 30 minutes’ drive from Zurich, beyond all recognition. Its economy was based on farming until it slashed tax rates to attract commerce after World War Two.
Obama can’t impose taxes on a company that doesn’t do business in the United States. What’s next? Are they going to move their oil refining to China? That is very possible.
China won’t impose the silly restrictions on building new refineries as has been done in the US nor will it threaten any asinine “profit windfall tax” to stunt growth in these companies as has been called for among liberals on Capital Hill.
The nation is becoming well aware of the dangerous prospect of another 3 plus years of Obamaramadingdong in office. He, in all his Imperial wisdom, cannot understand that changes in the business environment in a global economy means that business will seek the most profitable solutions to any problems created by government.
Liberals in general believe that business in the US is static. That it won’t change. Just like raising income taxes on the so-called wealthy – they believe that the wealthy will always be wealthy and accept their taxation without a fight. I’m sorry to inform them but the wealthy in this country didn’t get that way by ignoring reductions in personal income. And let us not forget that it is the wealthy who employ the rest of us. Begin to cut into their standard of living and people who rely upon them for jobs will lose said jobs and become dependent upon mother state to provide.
But what will happen when mother state is no longer capable of providing because its tax base moved off-shore? Perhaps that is a question that the new President should face in the coming days.
For weeks now I’ve been meaning to pounce on an ad being run by the born again oil man turn eco-opportunist T. Boone Pickens. Pickens is claiming that Iran is switching over their vehicle fuel to clean burning natural gas as if it were a decision based on saving energy. The reason why the oil rich nation is switching over to natural gas is because natural gas is a biproduct of oil exploration and it doesn’t need to be refined. Iran has no refining capacity. Zero refineries. Oil needs to be refined.
In order for Iranians to get gasoline, their crude has to be exported to a refining country and re-imported. Natural gas doesn’t need to be exported and re-imported to be used.
This ad is misleading. This ad is an attack on the intelligence of the American people. And this man is only looking to make a buck for himself AND SanFran Nan. Don’t fall for it.
Sensing blood in the water, their own blood that is, House Democrats will offer a bill that includes drilling. But somehow I don’t believe that it is a genuine drilling bill. Let’s investigate.
Democrats to offer bill with offshore oil drilling
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Saturday when the U.S. Congress returns next month from its summer recess, Democrats will offer legislation that could give oil companies drilling access to more offshore areas.
By moving to open additional federal waters to energy exploration, Democrats could narrow the differences they have with Republicans on tackling America’s energy problems, a concern that ranks high with voters heading into the November presidential and congressional elections. – emphasis MINE
This is a setup America. They want to be appearing to be taking action on the energy crisis BEFORE the election because they now perceive it as beneficial to their political ambitions. But if you think for a moment that anything they consider is genuine OR will actually pass, take another hit of that bong lefty because you are delusional.
Democrats do not want additional drilling and if they must submit to more drilling offshore, they will want some additional spending for pet projects that will have nothing to do with energy production or for futile “alternative energy” programs that are already over-funded and have no chance of contributing to energy independence in the foreseeable future.
So what is the catch? According to the Wicked Witch of the West herself…
In the Democrats’ weekly radio address, Pelosi of California said expanding drilling areas would be part of a broader bill which addresses other energy issues.
“It will consider opening portions of the (offshore) Outer Continental Shelf for drilling, with appropriate safeguards, and without taxpayer subsidies to Big Oil,” she said.
Pelosi said the legislation would require oil companies to pay billions of dollars in drilling royalties, which would be invested in clean energy resources.
That’s right, she wants to cut into the measly 9 percent profit margin in order to fund these massively expensive “alternative fuels” projects that, AGAIN, HAVE NO HOPE OF REDUCING AMERICA’S DEPENDENCY ON FOREIGN OIL IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. None, nada, no-way Jose.
What does House Minority Leader John Boehner have to say?
House Republican leader John Boehner of Ohio said the Democratic proposal falls short of Republican-sponsored legislation that would open more areas to oil drilling, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.
“While the speaker now claims to embrace a comprehensive energy plan that includes more conservation, more innovation, and more American energy production, the fact is her new effort appears to be just another flawed plan that will do little to lower gas prices,” Boehner said.
He said if Pelosi was serious about boosting domestic oil supplies, she would call the House back into session to take up such a bill. Congress is scheduled to return on September 8.
People if the oil companies are going to have subsidies cut and a tax levied on their profits, what incentive will they have to begin drilling? And who do you actually think will pay for these losses in revenue to the oil companies? WE WILL!
Pelosi’s pie-in-the-sky ambitions to “save the planet” are going to bankrupt American families. This left coast liberal (socialist) wants to spread her San Francisco brand of liberalism (socialism) into fly-over country. But Nancy doesn’t realize that it takes an awful lot of gasoline for us out here in fly-over country to function.
Nancy hopes to begin to profit from the Pickens Plan and that is her personal goal (beyond her political goals). I’ll guarantee that should the Dem plan actually pass, some of the “royalties” money that she wants to embezzle from oil companies will make their way into the hands of T. Boone Pickens and increase the value of her stock in his companies.
It is time to reject Pelosi and the “Gang of 10″. Support the Republicans holding the rogue session in the House and push for passage of their bill. And while we’re at it, don’t fall for her political ploy. Democrats are not interested in solving our oil dependency problems. They want the US dependent. It gives them power. Our only hope is a true Conservative takeover of Congress in November.
As the Do-Nothing Congress vacations, oil prices are falling, gold prices are falling, and the dollar is becoming stronger. What?!? The oil companies weren’t to blame? OH THE HUMANITY!
Light, sweet crude dropped $1.24 to settle at $113.77 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, and earlier traded as low as $111.34, its lowest level in more than three months.
Oil fell on a growing sense that economies around the world are joining the U.S. in a slowdown. The rising dollar, which is gaining strength on economic concerns, contributed to the sell-off in crude and other commodities. Oil is down more than $35 from its July 11 record of $147.27; meanwhile, gold prices that swept past $1,000 an ounce earlier this year are now below $800.
It seems that the cause for our rising oil prices was at least in part due to a weak dollar. Investors often hedge investments against a weaker dollar by investing in – wait for it – gold and oil.
The dollar headed for a fifth weekly gain against the euro, its longest winning streak in more than two years, as crude oil prices declined and the European and Japanese economies contracted.
The U.S. currency rose to the strongest level in almost six months against the euro and a seven-month high versus the yen. The pound dropped for an 11th day against the dollar, the longest run of declines in at least 37 years, on speculation a recession will force the Bank of England to cut interest rates.
Against the euro, the dollar rose 1 percent to $1.4683 at 3:28 p.m. in New York, from $1.4826 yesterday. It reached $1.4659, the strongest level since Feb. 20. The U.S. currency increased 0.7 percent to 110.54 yen, from 109.74. It earlier rose to 110.66, the strongest since Jan. 2. The euro fell 0.2 percent to 162.31 yen, from 162.68.
The U.S. currency has risen 2.2 percent against the euro this week in its longest stretch of weekly gains since February 2006. It’s headed for a 0.3 percent advance versus the yen, its second straight weekly increase. The euro is poised for a fourth weekly decline against the yen, dropping 1.9 percent, the biggest decrease since May.
Gold tumbled below $800 an ounce in Asian trading as the dollar headed for its longest winning streak in more than two years, reducing the appeal of the metal as an alternative investment to U.S. assets.
Oil, gold, copper and corn have plunged from records this year as the dollar strengthened and concern mounted that slower global economic growth will cut demand for raw materials. Silver and platinum also tumbled today amid increasing expectations the Federal Reserve won’t cut interest rates.
So the DemCong does what it does best – NOTHING – and oil prices fall. It seems that the free market actually does work.
The Strategic Petroleum Reserves didn’t need to be tapped Mr. Obama. The oil companies didn’t need to be taxed Ms. Pelosi and Mr. Reid. However, I do feel that the federal tax on gasoline needs to be suspended.
Oil companies profit about 9 cents per gallon from the sale of gasoline. The federal government profits 18.4 cents per gallon from the sale of gasoline. And the American consumer pays an average of 47 cents per gallon in taxes to state and federal governments when buying gasoline. It seems incomprehensible that the sales taxes on this product far exceed the profit margin and yet the taxing body finds it necessary to threaten oil companies with additional taxes that would eventually become the consumers’ burden to pay.
The federal tax alone is more than double that of the profit margin on gasoline. The overall average tax burden on gasoline purchases is 5 times the oil companies’ profit margin. This is disgusting.
So I don’t want to hear of more taxes on oil and oil products when the state, local, and federal governments are making more money of gasolines sales than the oil companies. Especially when the dependency on foreign sources of oil is 70%. Before we give the government more money that we pay at the pump for gasoline, let us explore the idea of making this nation truly energy independent. Drilling is the first step. We simply cannot rely on alternative energy sources that are years away from full development to bring us independence. We MUST take steps NOW on our own to ease the dependency.
Oil is our current energy standard and there is nothing that can replace all that it does. We have oil here in the United States but we haven’t been able to tap it because of liberal environmental policies. Our problems today were created in the 1970s when liberal environmental regulations began to make foreign oil more attractive. It became cheaper to produce oil in the Middle East and ship it via freighter to the US than producing it here.
In summery, our current situation was created by Democrats and they cannot be trusted to solve it. True it will take time for new drilling to ease our dependency issues. But remember, it took 30+ years of the current policies to create our current problems. How bad will it become if we do nothing? And how much worse will our economy suffer as a result?
For a few weeks now we’ve been bombarded on radio and television by ads paid for and staring T. Boone Pickens, life-long oilman and heavy investor in natural gas and of all things – wind energy. It seems that if the Pickens plan were to be fully implemented by the people of the US ‘ol T. Boone would stand to substantially gain financially from both sides of the deal. But the story doesn’t stop there.
The libtards, and most notably her Imperial Highness Nancy Pelosi, are in favor of expanding wind energy. According to research conducted by and cited by Michelle Malkin, Nancy Pelosi is heavily invested in T. Boone’s wind energy company herself.
Which brings us to Madame Speaker’s 2007 financial disclosure form. Schedule III lists “Assets and ‘Unearned Income’” of between $100,001-$250,000 from Clean Energy Fuels Corp. — Public Common Stock. Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (CLNE) is a natural gas provider founded by T. Boone Pickens. Yep, that T. Boone Pickens — former oilman turned wind-power evangelist whose ads touting a national wind campaign are now as ubiquitous as Viagra promos.
Naturally, the Pickens Big Wind plan is proudly endorsed by Do-Nothing Pelosi’s friends at the obstructionist Sierra Club. Through another company, Mesa Power, Pickens has committed upward of $12 billion in wind farms on the Texas panhandle. CLNE and Mesa Power are separate entities, but what benefits one piece of the Pickens puzzle benefits them all. The wind venture, as Pickens himself acknowledges, depends on permanent federal subsidies.
Pickens is banking on ‘em. And Pelosi is banking on him.
As reported on dontgomovement.com, Speaker Pelosi bought between $50,000 and $100,000 worth of stock in Pickens’ CLNE Corp. in May 2007 on the day of the initial public offering:
“She, and other investors, stand to gain a substantial return on their investment if gasoline prices stay high, and municipal, state and even the Federal governments start using natural gas as their primary fuel source. If gasoline prices fall? Alternative fuels and the cost to convert fleets over to them become less and less attractive.” SOURCE
So… Light dawns on Marble Head.
Gavel the Congress closed in order to pimp a failing book so that the will of the people can be ignored long enough that “the people” can have their minds polluted by ‘ol T. Boone and his fantastical tale of a nation in which cars run on natural gas (which makes him money) and 20% of electricity is derived from wind farms (which also makes him – and Nancy – money).
But there is something that T. Boone and Nancy won’t be telling you.
Sherry Eaton pulled into the driveway of her rural, high-desert home to see one of several giant wind turbines being assembled a half-mile away.
“I started to cry,” Eaton, 57, recalled of her first sight of the Willow Creek Wind Project in late July. “They’re going to be hanging over the back of our house, and now there’s the medical thing.”
“The medical thing” is new research suggesting that living close to wind turbines, as Eaton and her 60-year old husband, Mike, soon will be doing, can cause sleep disorders, difficulty with equilibrium, headaches, childhood “night terrors” and other health problems.
It kind of fits doesn’t it? We’ve been hearing for years out of the left that high tension power lines cause all kinds of similar health concerns. Let’s multiply that by a couple of thousand times throughout the Great Plains and give it some time then we’ll hear of catastrophic outbreaks of cancer and birth defects as people live in the shadow of these huge wind turbines.
On top of all the health concerns, what interests me is that there is little being said on this front from the leftards. I mean where are the cries from the animal rights wackos about the millions of dead birds that would be the result of the building of the thousands of wind turbines required to produce 20% of the nation’s electricity? How about the idiots who oppose off-shore drilling because oil platforms would destroy scenery? Wouldn’t thousands of wind turbines bisecting our nation be as much of an eye-sore? What about the nanny-staters who are so concerned about America’s obesity problem that they are convincing politicians to ban transfats? Aren’t they concerned about potential health problems associated with the magnetic fields created by these wind farms?
The bottom line is that there is no substitute for the energy provided by oil. And no matter who tries to convince you that a combination of the limited “alternative” sources “would” or “could” eliminate our dependency on foreign oil, they are wrong. Every form of energy has risks and the subject requires prudent weighing of pros and cons before we place all of our faith behind a new source of energy and run into a problem in the future.
Some say corn is the answer. What if there is another drought like the “Dust Bowl” of the 1930s? Other say wind. What if the health problems associated with wind energy leads to a substantial rise in cancer diagnoses and birth defects? And after conversion to wind, how long would it take for bird lovers to be up in arms over the wholesale slaughter of bird species?
I agree that we should free up fuel oil and natural gas resources currently being used to produce electricity for transportation and manufacturing needs. But the question is with what. The only viable solution to that question is expanded coal mining and clean coal technology combined with the building of new nuclear power plants.
The lefties have successfully blocked the building of new nuclear power plants since the 1970s based on fear mongering. They show the movie, ‘The China Syndrome’ and fear spreads. The point to Chernobyl and fear spreads. But what they aren’t explaining is ‘The China Syndrome’ is a work of fiction and Chernobyl was a failure of a plant in the Soviet Union caused by a failed political system that encouraged mediocrity and lack of a work ethic. The Soviets built a plant that was destined for accident before it was completed. Soviet craftsmanship outside of the AK-47 is not exactly known as quality.
Fact is that one of the nations that the American political left looks to as an example of how we should live is France. France gets most of their electrical power from… wait for it… nuclear power. OMG! HOW CAN THAT BE!
If this nation were to expand our cleaner than ever before coal technologies and built more nuclear power plants, it would do more than just free up oil and natural gas that could be better used for transportation and manufacturing, it would create jobs. WOW, an ECONOMIC BOON TO BOOT! Say it isn’t so Gribbit!
It is so.
Wind Energy is nothing more than more pie-in-the-sky liberal dreaming. A source of energy with a lot of promise but without fully facing the realities of the price of clean energy we may end up facing a repeat of what happened to hydroelectric energy.
Hydroelectric dams are THE cleanest and most efficient way to produce electricity. But what are the environmentalists doing to the dams? They are getting them blown up because they have an environmental impact. Salmon can’t spawn. Are we going to have to blow up a few thousand wind turbines in a few years as well?
As Congressional Democrats take their much deserved late summer recess, oil prices begin a decline; the question is – why?
Oil speculation wasn’t the Dems first villain, it was big oil and profits. BUT according to recent reports, a stronger dollar is being given partial credit for the rebound. Hmmm – the free-market at work. It seems that dollar dominated commodities such as oil and gold (which has also seen a recent rise in price) are used as hedges against a falling dollar. Go figure. H/T Drudge
THE biggest problem we have is our dependency on foreign countries that are not entirely friendly toward the United States for our energy supplies. We need complete independence from foreign oil. And how do we do that? Short-term is by tapping into domestic supplies and that means drilling. Long term solutions involve that yet undiscovered source of energy that would replace oil.
Alternative sources of energy is the ideal BUT not a complete solution. Placing their entire energy hopes in bio-fuels, the wind, and solar without ending our dependency issues now is foolish. We are in the current mess that we are in BECAUSE of liberal stupidity back in the 1970s and 1980s. They created our dependency on foreign sources of oil and now we are paying for it. If we do nothing to increase domestic oil production as an answer to rising costs now, how bad will it become in another 30 years? Democrats and their Politically Apathetic American Lemming sympathizers are blinded in their long-term fixations and ignore the immediate problem.
If the United States opened up to domestic oil production, our current sources of oil would recognize that their strangle hold on our economy would be ending and prices would drop. Even if it does take 3-5 years to see any yield from domestic sources the impact would be immediate.
We need drilling in ANWR and the outer continental shelf. We need new oil refineries. We need more nuclear energy. We need expanded coal production. And yes we need to harness the wind, solar, and better battery technology as well. Congressional Republicans are holding rogue sessions in the US House right now as Congressional Dems go windsurfing to bring awareness to this very thing. Without putting a real threat in place to challenge OPEC, we will slide into an economic recession which will rival the Great Depression. When this happens you can blame Nancy Pelosi and her pack of rabid socialists who don’t see a need to end our energy problems BEFORE the elections. Instead, they abruptly gaveled the House to recess and left to go windsurfing while you pay upwards of $4.50 a gallon while they play. All in order to give Obama an opportunity to use oil dependency as a political chip. But then he fails to deliver saying we need to inflate our tires and get regular tuneups.
Anyone who says we can achieve oil independence by hoping for alternative fuel development, checking your tire pressure, and getting tuneups is not truly giving anyone any true ‘Hope’ for a ‘Change’ in to our energy woes.
As we contend with High Priest Al Gore and his rantings about man’s contribution to the greenhouse effect through our use of fossil fuels, we should probably take a look at history. We know that the island known as Greenland is covered by a glacier and not very green. We also know that Greenland got its name from the Vikings who settled there during a period known as the Medieval Optimum or the Medieval Warm Period. The Medieval Optimum occurred between approximately 900 – 1300 AD and marked a substantial period of sustained warming far above what we are experiencing today as evident in the following graphic.
Source – Joseph D’Aleo, Certified Consultant Meteorologist and Executive Director of ICECAP
D’Aleo says about Greenland in particular:
Temperatures in Greenland were actually colder in the 1980s and early 1990s than anytime since the 1800s.
In late 1990s, when the Atlantic warmed, temperatures rose, but have not yet reached the peak set in 1930s and 1940s.
Icecap depth is increasing in the interior but now eroding in some areas near the edges as they did 70 years ago, but not due to global warming, just natural cycles in the Atlantic
This brings up the subject illustrated in the graphic, not only was Greenland colder in the 80s and 90s it was warm enough during the Medieval Optimum to farm the land which is now covered by a glacier. Hence the reason why it is called GREENland.
In the same respect, we shouldn’t ignore the MDI’s hysterics when it comes to Greenland and the Arctic. They like show images of the ice melting but what they aren’t telling you is that the footage is being shot during the warmest months of the year. They like to decry the plight of the polar bears and claim that they are dying because of the melting ice but what they fail to remind you about is the fact that polar bears can swim and prefer to swim in cold waters. They speak about the sea ice decreasing but they fail to mention that the interior ice is getting thicker. These being true, what else are they not telling us? How about the manipulation of the computer models from which they derive their manufactured data for instance? A computer will tell you anything that the programmer wants it to tell you. Hence the data used in High Priest Al Gore’s Power Point Propaganda Presentation also known as An Incomplete Deception err An Inconvenient Truth.
Truth be told, the whole hysteria driven green movement is based on lies. Lies popularized by High Priest Al Gore to boost his personal wealth. He is heavily invested in companies who develop wind and solar technologies. That means the more hysterical you get over our nation’s use of fossil fuels the richer he gets. Haven’t you ever wondered why he preaches to us about our use of fossil fuels but yet leaves his limo idling in the parking lot? Or how about his jet setting around the world in a private plane giving speeches attempting to convince you to curb your energy consumption? Or how about his wanting us to conserve energy in our homes and give up incandescent light bulbs in favor of those incredibly expensive compact fluorescent light bulbs while his home uses 19 times the energy that the average American household uses? He is on a quest to save this planet from itself no matter how much money it costs you with the promise of getting more wealthy along the way. What a guy huh.
Fact – Greenland was once farmland.
Fact – Global Warming Alarmists refuse to define what the ideal global temperature should be.
Fact – Change is the only constant when it comes to the climate.
Fact – No one – especially High Priest Al Gore – knows what tomorrow holds for global climate temperatures.
Fact – Keep in mind that some of the same people who are predicting global catastrophes are the same people who attempt to predict local weather forecasts. They can’t get an accurate 5 day forecast right, do you really trust them to tell you what global temperatures will be like in 10, 20, 30, 50, or 100 YEARS from now?
I don’t and neither should you.
